Malvasia di Casorzo Dolce

Cantina Sociale di Casorzo Malvasia di Casorzo Dolce 2012
Piedmont, Italy

Review: Sweet! Red! Bubbles! No, don't run away -- it's delicious! Seriously. This wine is worlds different than the last sweet red I blogged. Sweet, but not too sweet, with balanced acidity. Nice round red fruit -- cherries and strawberries -- with aromas of roses and a lingering fruity finish. This wine is not fully sparkling, but is frizzante, with some fizziness.

This wine is from Asti in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy. It's made from the red grape Malvasia Nera, part of the the large family of Malvasia grapes (the source of one type of the much loved Madeira). While most of the Malvasia family is white, this is indeed a red grape!

Pairing: Dark chocolate mousse with berries! Or with a cheese plate!

Bottom Line: Fun and bubbly! I dig it. And at about $12, a great value buy.

  1. OMG! My family and I have been looking for this wine for over a year. It is a delicious somewhat sweet wine with an effervescent taste. I could only get it from a family member who would bring it from Baltimore. Nedless to say, the whole family has been on a scavenger hunt. I've been hidding one bottle for me for about a year. Now i'll try to buy it on line. If anyone knows where I can get a case, cheap please let me know. I've enjoyed different kinds of wine but this is the best hands down. It goes perfect with about any food or just to entertain. It is light and crisp. Thank you Thank you! FYI I don't particularly like sweet wines

    1. Hi Rosa! Yes, it is fabulous. I'm not a big fan of most sweet table wine either, but this one really hits the spot. We carry it in both of locations of the Crystal City Wine Shop in Arlington, VA. I don't know of specific retailers in New York that would carry it, but if it is distributed in the State your local shop should be able to order it for you. Worst case, I'm driving to New York in June to see some family and can bring you a case! :)

    1. In MD: Rips off of 301 in Bowie; LaTelas on right off of 175 in Hanover/Severn; and Total Wine (used to be Corridor Wine) in the Corridor Marketplace in Laurel. Those are the three I've purchased Malvasia di Casorzo.

    3. Hi Britany -- I would find a local wine shop in Cary and ask them. Perhaps they would be able to order for you? Good luck!
